Norte de Marruecos / Northern Morocco

Primero que nada gracias a todos por sus comentarios, trataré de hacer entradas de los diferentes lugares en los que mostraron interés. Por ahora quiero hacer una entrada sobre el Norte de Marruecos, el cual pude conocer el pasado diciembre. Este viaje fue especial por varias razones.

First of all thanks for all your comments, I will try to make entries on the different places that were of interest to you. In this entry I will talk about Northern Morocco, which I had the pleasure of visiting last December. This trip was special for different reasons.

Por un lado fui en un tour guiado, algo que nunca había hecho, por lo general me gusta viajar sin tanta estructura para conocer el país más de cerca y tener más flexibilidad. Una de las razones por la que decidí viajar así fue el corto tiempo que tenía para visitar (3 días). Así que si están en el sur de España y tienen pocos días libres y ganas de conocer un poco de Marruecos les recomiendo hacer lo mismo. En este tour los lugares que recorrí son los siguientes:

For starters I went in a guided tour, something I had never done before; usually I like to travel in a less structured manner to get to know the country better and to have more flexibility. One of the reasons that lead me to decide to travel like this was the short time I had to visit (3 days). So if you ever find yourself in the south of Spain with a couple of days to spare I would recommend you to do the same. In this tour the places I visited are the following:

Primero llegamos a Ceuta, curiosamente esta ciudad pertenece a España y no a Maruecos, a pesar de que se encuentra ya en el continente africano. En sí la ciudad no es muy llamativa en cuando a arquitectura pero es interesante conocerla debido a toda la historia que hay detrás de ella, ya que desde un punto geopolítico siempre ha sido importante ya que es un punto de conexión entre África y Europa. Ya en Marruecos la primera ciudad que visitamos fue Tetuán. Es una ciudad interesante ya que aunque no tiene ningún monumento en específico que sobresalga tanto los barrios como los mercados te dan una buena idea de lo que es Marruecos. Algo que se mi hizo muy interesante es que en la cultura marroquí la riqueza más que ostentarla es algo que se mantiene en cierta forma oculta. No es extraño encontrar casas con una fachada muy simple y rústica y con un interior que se asemeja más a un pequeño palacio.

First we arrived at Ceuta, which interestingly is a city that belongs to Spain and not to Morocco, even though it is located in Africa. The city in itself is not that interesting as far as architecture but is interesting to know it because of the history that is behind it. Being a link between Africa and Europe, it has always been an important city from a geopolitical perspective. The first Moroccan city that I visited was Tetuan. Although this city doesn’t have any monument that stands out it gives you a good idea of what Morocco really is. Something that I found very interesting about Moroccan culture is that wealth instead of being shown off is kept in a way hidden. For this reason it is not strange to find houses with a very simple and rustic facade and with an interior that resembles a small palace.

Después nos dirigimos a Tánger. En sus alrededores vimos lugares interesantes como cavernas formadas por la fuerza del mar así como el punto donde el océano atlántico y el mediterráneo se encuentran. Por último fuimos a Chefchaouen, un pueblo que está en las montañas. En lo personal fue el lugar que más me gustó con blancos y azules dominando la arquitectura del pueblo. Es un lugar mágico, que me recuerda un poco a pueblos en las islas griegas, realmente vale la pena visitar Chefchaouen. Yo encontré a Marruecos un lugar sumamente interesante donde, de manera inesperada y sin buscar, puedes encontrar lo que en otros lados has estado buscando…

After we headed to Tanger. We visited very interesting places close to the city such as some caves that were made by the waves crashing against rock formations and the spot where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean oceans meet. Last but not least, we when to Chefchaouen, a small town in the mountains. Personally this was the place that I liked the most, with white and blue dominating the town architecture. It is truly a magical place that reminds me a bit of the typical small town in the Greek islands, it is really worth visiting Chefchaouen. I found Morocco to be a very interesting place where, unexpectedly and without looking for it, you can find what you have been looking for in other places…
